Barker Loft

Los Angeles, CA

Homes
Design + Build

This project involved a targeted design-build intervention within a historic Barker Block loft in Downtown Los Angeles. Rather than a full renovation, the scope focused on introducing a new bedroom and closet while preserving the openness and character of the original warehouse space.

The primary design challenge was creating privacy without compromising light, volume, or the loft’s industrial identity. A new wall was carefully inserted to define the bedroom zone, positioned to respect existing structure, window locations, and circulation. The intervention is intentionally restrained, reading as a layer within the space rather than a permanent subdivision.

To maintain a sense of openness, the bedroom enclosure incorporates hand-built barn doors constructed from recycled wood. These sliding doors allow the space to remain visually connected to the rest of the loft when open, while providing full privacy when closed. The material choice reinforces the tactile, honest character of the building and introduces warmth against the existing concrete, steel, and timber structure.

The closet is integrated into the new wall assembly, maximizing efficiency without adding visual weight. Details were kept simple, allowing the craftsmanship of the doors and the existing architectural elements to remain the focus. Lighting and proportions were carefully considered so the new bedroom feels connected to the larger loft rather than isolated from it.

This project reflects a design-build approach rooted in precision and restraint. By working within the existing structure and making a limited but thoughtful intervention, the loft gains functionality and privacy while retaining the openness and material integrity that define Downtown Los Angeles warehouse living.
