Cloverdale II

Miracle Mile - HPOZ

Los Angeles, CA

Custom Home Design

Set within a Historic Preservation Overlay Zone in Los Angeles, the Cloverdale Residence is a full-scale reconstruction that balances historic continuity with contemporary living. Originally left vacant for years, the property was reimagined through a complete down-to-the-studs remodel, restoring its architectural identity while adapting it for a new generation of use.

The design carefully preserves defining elements of the home’s Spanish-Mediterranean character, including the prominent street-facing living room with expansive windows, reconstructed to match the original proportions and rhythm. Signature features such as the roof deck and porte-cochere were retained and rebuilt in accordance with HPOZ guidelines, reinforcing the home’s historic presence within the neighborhood fabric.

Internally, the layout was reconfigured to support modern living while maintaining spatial hierarchy and architectural detail. The ground floor organizes a series of connected yet distinct spaces, including a large living room, kitchen, and dining area, anchored by traditional elements like exposed beams, arched openings, and coved ceilings. The upper level provides private living quarters, including a primary suite with direct access to a balcony, reinforcing indoor-outdoor relationships typical of the style.

At the rear of the property, the existing detached garage was converted into an accessory dwelling unit, functioning as a pool house and home office. This intervention introduces a flexible secondary structure that expands the usability of the site while aligning with Los Angeles’ evolving housing priorities.

The project reflects a disciplined approach to preservation, where original architectural intent is not only maintained but clarified. By combining historical reconstruction with thoughtful programmatic updates, the Cloverdale Residence demonstrates how legacy homes can be revitalized to meet contemporary expectations without compromising their cultural and contextual value.
