Design + Construction Coordination
Restaurants
Mr. O’s Restaurant is a hospitality project defined by collaboration, craft, and a careful balance between atmosphere and operational clarity. Serving as Architect of Record, my role focused on translating the design vision into a fully permitted, buildable project while supporting the team through construction administration. Guerin Swing led the interior design and construction, shaping the character and personality of the space, while my work ensured that vision could move smoothly through approvals and into reality.
The project transforms an existing building into a layered dining and lounge environment that feels intimate, warm, and distinctly social. The spatial organization is centered around the bar, which acts as both a visual anchor and a point of energy within the restaurant. From this core, seating zones radiate outward, offering a range of experiences, from bar seating and communal tables to quieter lounge areas and dining banquettes. The layout supports fluid movement for guests and staff alike, an essential consideration in a high-use restaurant environment.
Materiality plays a significant role in defining the mood. Wood slat ceilings introduce texture and rhythm overhead, softening acoustics while visually unifying the space. Custom millwork, shelving, and built-ins frame the bar and lounge areas, creating moments for display and adding a sense of depth and familiarity. Upholstered seating, warm metals, patterned wall coverings, and carefully layered lighting work together to produce a space that feels both curated and comfortable. The result is an interior that invites lingering rather than quick turnover.
As Architect of Record, my involvement included navigating zoning and building code requirements, coordinating with consultants, and guiding the project through permitting. Restaurant projects often require careful coordination between life safety, accessibility, mechanical systems, and health department requirements, all while preserving the integrity of the design. Construction administration further ensured that detailing, clearances, and assemblies were executed in alignment with the approved documents and the design intent.
Mr. O’s reflects a successful partnership between architecture, design, and construction. The project demonstrates how a strong concept can be realized through clear documentation, proactive coordination, and hands-on oversight during construction. The finished restaurant offers a refined yet approachable environment, one that supports both the social energy of dining and the practical demands of a working restaurant, and stands as an example of collaborative practice delivering a cohesive and well-resolved space.
